12:45 UPDATE: Pogba fee ‘miles apart’

Real Madrid have ditched plans to sign Tottenham playmaker Christian Eriksen – leaving Manchester United’s Paul Pogba their top priority.

Eriksen went public with his desire to leave Spurs last week but the Daily Star claim Zinedine Zidane has blocked any potential deal.

It’s said the Dane is now relying on Inter Milan to offer him a route out of London.

The Daily Star claim Zidane views Pogba as the ‘last piece of the puzzle’ and is convinced the Frenchman wants to leave Old Trafford this summer.

However, it’s believed United want £133.5million for the 26-year-old – miles away from what Real would be prepared to pay.

Manchester United have been backed to take a risk by signing Gareth Bale from Real Madrid by former coach Rene Meulensteen.

“You would obviously talk about bringing in a high-profile player in, but is Gareth Bale still at his best?” Meulensteen told talkSPORT.

“We all know he’s had his fair share of injuries, so it’s always a risk.

“But, on the other hand, a top-notch Gareth Bale is a really good asset for Manchester United.

“He brings power, he brings pace and he can create and score goals. It’s a bit difficult to see where he is at the moment, though.”

Leicester, who signed Maguire from Hull for £17m in June 2017, do not want to sell their ball-playing defender.

Ajax superstar Matthijs De Ligt has hinted that Barcelona will be his next destination.

Manchester United, PSG and Barcelona have all been linked with the 19-year-old centre-back.

“I still do not know what my heart says. In my holidays I will be able to think about it and decide what I am going to do with my future,” De Ligt said.

“The most important thing is to know that in the team where I go I can have a leading role and play many games.

“I do not know when I’m going to have it resolved, but I’m going to take my time. Money is not the problem. Of course it would be nice to play De Jong at Barça, but I must also look at what is best for me.”

“He doesn’t move from it. No matter what you tell him, no matter what you advise him, no matter what your opinion is, he will never change.

“But he did it the way he likes it. He has his own vision of football and, in the end, he is where he is with it and you have to respect that.”

And Nicol wants to see Liverpool make a move for the Portugal international, who could cost around £70million.

“I think this would be a decent signing for Liverpool. He would play in the middle of the park,” the former Reds right-back told ESPN FC. “I think Bruno Fernandes would be a good addition.

“Liverpool need to get a bigger squad and a bigger squad so that they can give people a break without the standard dropping.”
