Man Utd interest in Rakitic ends as Pogba decides to stay after talks with Solskjaer

MANCHESTER UNITED have cooled their interest in Ivan Rakitic after Paul Pogba’s transfer U-turn.

Barcelona’s Croatian star was viewed as the ideal replacement for the Frenchman while uncertainty over his Old Trafford intensified.

But the 25-year-old has been in resurgent form since Ole Gunnar Solskjaer took over in December.

He was ready to force a move away from United earlier in the season after falling out with the axed Jose Mourinho.

His brother even admitted the World Cup winner did want out of United due to the rows.

Mathias Pogba told Telefoot: “Did Paul think about leaving because of Mourinho? Of course.”

But the £89m club-record has held a series of private talks with Solskjaer over the last few weeks at Carrington and has assured him he wants to stay, as exclusively revealed by Sun Sport.

And that has led to The Standard United ending their interest in Barca ace Rakitic, 31, as the Red Devils turned their focus on transfer targets elsewhere.

The Croatian is expected to be available at the end of the season after Frenkie de Jong was signed from Ajax.

The Netherlands international has agreed to move to the La Liga champions for an initial £65million.

Rakitic has a contract at the Nou Camp until 2021 but despite playing a central role for Ernesto Valverde this season is expected to be replaced by the 21-year-old.

His desire to play regular football and knowledge that Barca will not offer him an improved contract as he prepares to turn 31 could see him consider options elsewhere.

Solskjaer, expected to be officially announced as full-time boss this month, is willing to let the club’s current defenders prove themselves before splashing out on a new one this summer.

The Norwegian has £80million to spend on a centre-back but his priority is a right winger, with Dortmund’s Jadon Sancho his ideal target.
