The Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) conclude the final registration weekend Sunday, with a call to the country’s youth to come out and exercise their rights. The IEC estimates there will be additional 1 million new voters, hoping the majority will be young first time voters.Over 22,000 voting stations are registering voters, with stations opening between 0800 to 1700 hours.
IEC chairperson, Glenn Mashinini, said despite some protests and bad weather, the commission is still committed to registering as many people as possible.
“We particularly wish to appeal to the young people. As much as we have been successful in that over 70 percent of eligible voters in South Africa are registered, we have demographic information that tells us that we have almost 10 million South Africans who are eligible to vote but are not registered. Almost two thirds of those people are our young people between the ages of 18 and 30.”
